CASS is a community organisation running an advice, advocacy and support services for older people and those with disabilities within Islington and Hackney Boroughs of London. CASS commenced operation in Islington in 1998. CASS has expanded its work to include these other East London local authorities / boroughs - Tower Hamlets, Newham, Barking and Dagenham, and the surrounding areas.
CASS is run by a management committee, led by a chair, there is a vice chair, secretary, treasurer. The management committee oversees the policies and custodians of the constitution and funds of the organisation to ensure compliance and prudence and smooth running of the organisation. The Chief Executive is accountable to the management committee and oversees the day to day running of the organisation including staff, clients and resources management. The project manager is responsible for managing the Practical support project for Disabled people, a partnership Big Lottery funded project that is running until December 2008.
There are two project coordinators shared post that oversee this project on day to day basis. Together they recruit, train and deploy volunteers to carry out job requests from disabled, older persons or those who are long time ill or frail to assist them with gardening, handiwork, decorating, minor repairs, home help, escorting to hospitals, shops, post office, befriending or other jobs. These volunteers are assisted with training for job, CV writing and job search, including work experience paid or unpaid leading to employment or self employment or further training. That is part of the criteria for the funding awarded for this project. There is also an office administrator to support this work and the office. The CASS Chief Executive has no direct involvement with the practical support project for the disabled people.
The Chief Executive is committed to Developing new long term projects for CASS in the East London Area such as the Recycling, Holidays, Mobility, Advice and information, Advocacy, Representation, Training, Welfare to work and general support to those who meet the agreed criteria.
